What to know and plan for an October 2026 vacation to Hawaii

If you’re going to Hawaii this October, you’ll likely want to get an idea of what sort of weather you can expect, what special events are taking place, etc. We’ve organized all those important vacation topics and even more helpful information into this one convenient spot.

Overall, October is an excellent month for a Hawaii vacation. While the weather in the rest of the Northern Hemisphere is cooling down, Hawaii continues to be in endless summer mode. Another advantage to visiting in October is that crowds and hotel rates tend to be lower than peak summer and holiday periods.

What’s the weather like in Hawaii in October?

When I think of October in Hawaii, I think of warm sunshine in a vibrant tropical environment. At the beach resorts, for daytime high temperatures, you can expect mid-to-upper 80°F (roughly 30°C). Evening temperatures only tend to dip into the lower 70s.

October is not typically considered to be a rainy month in Hawaii. Rainfall levels are generally low — especially when compared to the wetter, winter months.

From our experience, Hawaii tends to feel a little more humid in October. So, lightweight, quick-drying clothes will feel most comfortable.

Ocean temperatures are at their warmest of the year. In September and October, the water temperatures near Honolulu are at approximately 81°F (27.2°C).

Hurricane Season

As we mentioned in our September planning guide to Hawaii, this time of year is hurricane season. The months of August and September have historically been the most active hurricane months in the Central Pacific Region. In the past, fewer tropical storms have occurred in the month of October. The 2026 hurricane season has already been unusually busy around Hawaii with hurricanes Lala and Lowell both coming within 100 miles of the Hawaiian islands.

Though, hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii, if they pass near the Hawaiian Islands, they can cause high winds, heavy rain, and flooding. In September 2026, Hurricane Lowell left significant damage to the island of Kauai and the Hawaii Tourism Authority advised visitors to postpone or divert their travel to Kauai. While no timeline was given, our guess is that by the end of September, tourists will be welcome again.

If a hurricane is threatening Hawaii, many airlines and hotels tend to offer a bit more flexibility to cancel and/or reschedule vacation plans. So keep your eyes on the weather forecasts as your trip approaches.

What to pack to wear for evening/ dinner in Hawaii

For evening wear, you can leave the fancy clothes at home because Hawaii’s dress code is casual. Ladies might want to pack summer dresses or perhaps resort-wear tops with nice shorts, skorts, or trousers. For men, we suggest you pack summery shirts, like polos or short-sleeve button downs, along with nice shorts. If you have clothing with “Hawaiian prints” they’ll be perfect to wear on your Hawaii vacation.

Where to stay based on the weather of October

The good news for October is that it’s not in the rainy season, so you don’t need to worry about where you should stay to avoid rain.

From our experience, we’ve found September and October to feel quite humid in the Hawaiian Islands. With both the heat and humidity, we highly recommend you stay in accommodations with air conditioning.

Most Hawaii hotels have air-conditioned rooms. We have stayed in two hotels — Hotel Molokai (before they added air conditioning to their garden-view rooms)  and Hana-Maui Resort — that didn’t have air conditioning. If we could have changed one thing about those stays, we would have appreciated air conditioning.

If you are opting for a VRBO condo or other vacation rental, that’s where you have to be careful to check if your prospective vacation condo or villa has air conditioning. We’ve stayed in a couple of Hawaii vacation rentals without air conditioning and we really wished we had air conditioning. When searching for vacation rentals, look for filters that allow you to filter for rentals with air conditioning.

October is a month when ocean conditions start to transition from calmer, summer conditions to the bigger swells of winter. As such, if you were considering a tour of the Na Pali Coast that departs from the North Shore or kayaking the Na Pali Coast, we recommend you make a back up plan as the conditions might not be safe enough. The tour companies will let you know if the forecast is safe or not.

As October is on the cusp of the winter big wave season, there can be days of higher surf. It’s always a good idea to check ocean conditions before you swim, dive or snorkel. For your safety, we recommend organized tours for snorkeling and diving.

Are there any natural occurrences that happen in October?

Flowers bloom all year round in Hawaii, so, you’ll get to see loads of gorgeous tropical plants and flowers. You’ll definitely have opportunities to snap photos of hibiscus, ginger, and fragrant plumeria.

Though humpback whale watching season doesn’t “officially” start for another couple of months, quite often, the first whales are spotted in October. If you go out for a snorkel or sunset catamaran cruise, keep your eyes peeled for humpback whales.

Though there’s no seasonality tied to volcanic activity, Kilauea continues to be in an interesting pattern of dramatic, fountaining eruptions followed by degassing “rest”. Since December 2024, there have been over 50 eruption episodes. If you are going to Hawaii’s Big Island, you might have an opportunity to see one of these eruptions. Notable night sky events in October

Hawaii is a tremendous place for stargazing. This October is shaping up to be a very good month in terms of night sky events.

October 4: Saturn will be fully illuminated by the sun as it is at its closest approach to Earth. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and visible all night long.

October 8-9: Draconids Meteor Shower peaks on the night of the 8th into the morning of the 9th. This minor meteor shower produces about 10 meteors per hour.

October 10: New (no) Moon – The Moon will not be visible in the night sky, which makes this evening the ideal time for stargazing.

October 12: The planet Mercury will be visible low in the western sky just after sunset.

October 21-22: Orionids Meteor Shower will peak on the night of October 21 and morning of October 22. It produces roughly 20 meteors per hour.

October 26: Full Moon
