If you are like me, seeing a honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle) is such a thrill. Though you might be tempted to approach them, always keep a distance of at least 10 feet. Given that they come onto beaches to rest and soak up sun, I try to give them much more space.
Gail photographed this honu resting on Maui’s “Baby Beach” in Lahaina. Baby Beach was closed for many months after the August 2023 fires. The good news is that it’s open again. I follow Jesse Wald’s updates on Lahaina’s recovery. Here’s a short instagram update from March 2026 with aerial views of Baby Beach. It’s nice to see families enjoying this beach again.
