It’s been a week since Lowell left a path of destruction on the island of Kauai. I’ve been encouraged by the recovery so far. There’s still a long way to go, but progress is happening. Here’s a roundup of some of the hurricane-related news that caught our eye.
Power Restoration
Electricity has been restored for 81% of Kauai’s customers as of September 14. More workers are scheduled to arrive this week to aid in the recovery. For more details, see this link.
Destroyed and Damaged Home Numbers
My heart aches for the residents who lost their homes. At the most recent report, 10 homes were destroyed and 64 suffered major damage.
Ko’a Kea Resort Announces Reopening
On our initial article about the aftermath of Hurricane Lowell, we shared a viral CBS news video showing storm surge flooding Ko’a Kea. I feared that their recovery would take months, but in a Facebook post from September 14, this Poipu resort announce that they are accepting guests again starting September 16th.
Kauai State Parks Remain Closed
Per the Department of Land and Natural Resources, all Kauai Island parks remain closed. For an example of part of the damage from Kokee State Park, see the following video showing the stunning before and after effects.
