We parked overnight at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor when we stayed at HHV two years ago. Now, if they are charging $1/hr, it’s not worth it anymore since the hotel charger $24/day ($30/day for valet parking).

Update — I heard back from my really helpful contact at the HHV — the only suggestion was to park at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor IF you can find parking. Currently it’s 25 cents an hour, but it will go up to $1/hour at the end of 2009. Parking there is very difficult to find and you still have a little bit of a trek to get to the HHV.

As much as I dislike paying for hotel valet service, sometimes I think it’s worth the trouble in Waikiki.

@ Tesh & Shelby – I am not aware of any cheap parking lots near the Hilton Hawaiian Village. There is a parking lot at Fort DeRussy (adjacent to the Hilton Hawaiian Village), but if my memory serves me right, it won’t really save you any money, plus you’d have to walk a bit further.

I’ve asked one of my contacts at the HHV for any additional ideas, but I don’t expect any alternatives. If I hear differently, I’ll post it in the comments here.

Deb – you might try finding free or metered parking near the zoo or at Kapiolani Park. You’ll probably have to walk at least a couple of blocks. I know paying for parking is a pain, but we stayed at the Marriott less than a year ago and just found it more convenient to opt for their valet parking which was $28 per day and only a few dollars more than the hotel’s self-park. My hotel was right besides of monsarrat ave. and it has free parking on kapiolani park. We used that through our stay and saved lot of bucks ($20 per day)! they always has plenty of parking available whenever we reached there in night or day. Sometimes parking there is banned, if they have some event going on. Read the signs carefully before park.

tourist should have to pay for parking instead of taking the free parking we that live here try to get its 150 a month for us to park here and that on top of our rent, if your coming to visit have a great time but do us locals a favor and get parking at your hotel leave the ala wai and the meters for us .

Very useful map. Last year I used to park next to honolulu zoo and I saved a lot of money on that for a couple of days, until my car got broken in to. So just be careful people. I’m going back this April and I’m probably going to use the honolulu zoo parking again : )

My favorite place to park in Waikiki at night is next to the Honolulu Zoo. I believe the main parking lot is free at night. It is a long walk to restaurants in the middle of Waikiki, but if you are going to have a big dinner, you might as well walk off some of the pounds anyway (and save some bucks while you are at it). I think the most expensive parking lot is at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. The more convenient a parking lot is, the more expensive it seems to be.
