We absolutely love listening to Hawaii-style radio stations while we explore the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. Listening to relaxing and cheerful sounds of slack key guitars and ukuleles only enhance a Hawaii vacation. The local music definitely adds to the sense of place.
Our adventures often have us hitting the roads early in the day while the morning shows are on. We think it’s fun to listen to the local jokes and banter. In our opinion, it’s an extra way to observe and learn about the local culture.
We recommend that you tune into the local-style stations as you’re driving in Hawaii. Here are stations that we recommend that tend to play Hawaiian classics along with some of the newer-style songs:
Oahu: Hawaiian 105 KINE – 105.1 FM / 98.3 FM
Maui: KPOA – 93.5 FM
Hawaii, the Big Island: KAPA airs from both the Kona side at 99.1 FM and the Hilo side of the island at 103.1 FM.
We haven’t found a a Kauai favorite. If you have one, please let us know.
One thing that you might find surprising is that the island radio stations are rarely strong enough to reach the entire island, much less to other islands.
