Celine’s photo was taken on the Kalalau Trail from the north side of Kauai. This particular view is of Hanakapiai Beach, which is the turn-around point for folks who hike the first two miles of the trail and return back to the starting point for a total of four miles.
Hiking the first two miles of the trail does not require a permit. If you plan to hike the entire 11-mile length or 22 miles round trip, permits are required.
Scenes like this one make this moderately strenuous trail worth the effort. Check out our tips for hiking the Kalalau Trail so that you won’t make some of the same mistakes that we made.
