Pineapple Plants

General Hawaii

The first time I ever saw a pineapple plant was on my first trip to Hawaii.  It really is an interesting and unusual plant.  Here is a photo we took on our most recent trip to Hawaii.

Did you know it takes a pineapple plant about 18 to 24 months to produce a pineapple?  Here’s a link to other fun facts about pineapples

  1. Cool picture!! I have never seen a picture of the pineapple plant or seen a plant in person. I didn’t know it took that long to grow a pineapple. WOW!

Thanks, Laura! The first time I saw a pineapple plant, I had to do a double take. Pineapple plants look so funny to me. They kind of look like something you’d see in a science fiction movie. I’m not sure if you can tell from the photo, but those pineapples were probably only half grown.

Laura – FYI, a friend wrote an interesting post on growing a pineapple plant at home. Here is the link: http://doublebrush.typepad.com/hawaiivacationgifts/2007/07/how-to-grow-a-h.html

  4. Mahalo for the mention Sheila! When I saw your photo it reminded me of how nice my pineapple patch was coming along till my puppy demolished it! We have started over but it will take at least 2 years before we get any fruit again.

HVG – Sorry to hear that your puppy destroyed another pineapple patch. I’m sure the puppy was only protecting you. ;-)

Would it help to try growing them in containers?
