Aloha Friday Photo: Maui in Moonlight

Mahalo to Carl Priess for sharing this interesting photo and the story behind it. Here’s what he shared about taking this shot.

“I was in Maui with a total eclipse of the full moon to be on 3/3/26 at 1:34 a.m. so I was up to see it. Unfortunately, it was cloud shrouded for the duration (58 min). But, I stayed up anyway and at about 4:30 a.m. the clouds broke and the full moon was brilliant, almost sunlike. It created an interesting contrast between day when the colors are soft and warm and the early morning with almost monochromatic colors and bold, crisp contrasts. Because it was a handheld photo I did minimal sharpening, otherwise it is as it was taken.”

Wow, Carl is right, this moonlight does seem almost sunlike. It’s bright enough that we can detect a little bit of green in the palm tree.

Though I can imagine it must have been disappointing to miss the eclipse, Carl’s decision to stay awake and observe anyway paid off.

We have visited Maui during a full moon and also noticed how unusually bright the moon seems. It must be the reflection of the moonlight off the ocean that amplifies the light.

Happy Aloha Friday!
