Michigan is the ‘mitten’ state, and the Grand Rapids area is sometimes referred to as ‘Furniture City’ because of the many furniture manufacturing companies that are here.

Well I live in Silverdale, now I did here that the reason it was named Silverdale was because Goldendale was already taken..
I was raised in Hawaii in a town called Kaneohe, which means Bamboo Man literally but figurally speaking the meaning is Bamboo forrest……

Batangas, particulary Lipa is known as the Coffee Granary of the Philippines. Batangas is famous for its Barako Coffee

Hi Melli – I never knew Maryland was known as the home of the Blue Crab. Maybe the folks from the western part of the state are grumpy….er crabby that they don’t have crabs in their area? So maybe the logo, “Maryland is for Crabs” fits them, too.

Well… I live in Maryland – home of the Blue Crab — and it’s not really a nickname — but our logo I guess is “Maryland is for Crabs!” … all our t-shirts have a crabby little crustacean on them!!! Now, I live very *VERY* near the Chesapeake Bay – so I find the whole crabby thing to be quite cute… but I often wonder about the folks who live in western Maryland, up in the mountains! They probably don’t find our motto to really “fit” with their way of life….

@ Heather – Hi, neighbor! It’s been a while since I’ve been to the Grand Strand. I think it’s only about a 3 hour drive to there now, or so I hear. I should go there to get my beach fix instead of trekking all the way to Hawaii sometime.

SC is the Palmetto State. And Myrtle Beach is also called the “Grand Strand.” That has to do with the geography. But a lot of folks who come here on vacation just call it “the beach.” I love living at “the beach!”

@ Sher – I’ve never been to the home of Billy the Kid. I’d love to get out that way sometime.

@ Jacki – I’m near your neck of the woods in the “tarheel state”, North Carolina. Though I am most definitely NOT a fan of the UNC Tarheels. They are evil in my book. I know it must sound strange for a North Carolinian to write about Hawaii, but I’m a real nut over Hawaii and I get there as often as I can.

I've been living in the 'land of the rising sun' (japan) since 2000. I was born in the 'pearl of the orient' (philippines); born and raised in the 'city of flowers' (zamboanga city) and studied college in the 'queen of the south'(cebu city). ... now i'm wondering who gave these places those nicknames?!
