In recent days, some magical scenes signal Hawaii’s coming winter season. Those signs are the first humpback whale sighting and big waves are making their way to the north shores.

First Official Humpback Whale Sighting of the 25/26 Season

KHON2 says the first humpback whale sighting of the season was off the coast of Kauai on October 14. Folks on board a Holo Holo Charters tour boat were on their way to Ni’ihau when a whale breached rough out of the water. How exciting!

We had heard rumors that a humpback might have been seen near Maui in September, but there was no news report of this sighting.

We’ve been keeping an eye on the news due to our 16th annual humpback whale sighting contest. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Phyllis from Indiana!

North Shore Swells Rolling In

In recent days, there have been high surf advisories on the north shores of the Hawaiian Islands. Here’a link to a short Instagram video of big waves rolling in at Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore.

As we’ve mentioned in our October guide to Hawaii, this month can be a time of transition from the generally milder ocean conditions of summer to the bigger surf of winter. That’s certainly proven to be the case for this October.
