Aloha Friday Photo: Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark

Mahalo to Julie Shank for sharing this neat shot of Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark for Aloha Friday Photos.

Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark, is located at Kailua Bay, Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. It’s significant because this site was once the residence of King Kamehameha I. The replica structures honor the history and legacy of the king who united the Hawaiian Islands under one kingdom.

As you can see from Julie’s photo, this beach is a great launching point for outrigger canoes. In fact, the world’s largest outrigger canoe race, Queen Lili’uokalani Canoe Race, takes place this weekend in Kailua-Kona. It will be a particularly vibrant scene and vibe in Kona this weekend.

Julie told us that she took this photo in May 2023. She said that there was a regatta going on. It was likely the Keauhou Long Distance Race that typically takes place in May. She told us, “We were here watching the regatta. Ended up with drinks and pu pu at Cheeky Tiki across the way.” That sounds like a delightful way to spend an afternoon!

Happy Aloha Friday!
