Mahalo to Erin Markson for sharing this stunning Aloha Friday Photo.
Erin captured this photo on May 6th during Kilauea’s 20th episode of this on-again-off-again eruption phase. The first episode of these incredible lava fountains started December 23, 2024 in Halemaumau crater within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The fountains have been reaching heights of well over 500 feet (150 meters).
Erin told us that she’s been waiting/trying for over 20 years to witness an eruption. Her patience was finally rewarded by this spectacular activity. She even braved cold, windy and rainy conditions to see it.
For more information on this current eruption phase, see this link and to play a visit to potentially view this spectacle, see this link.
To check in on the livestream to see what the volcano is doing, check out the V1 cam or the V2 cam YouTube channels. I noticed some low, intermittent fountaining and lava flow this morning on the V1 cam. That type of activity has usually been a precursor for a larger fountain event.
The lava activity has been confined to Kilauea’s summit caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It is not posing a danger to homes.
Happy Aloha Friday!
