Effective today, no domestic Hawaii travel restrictions and no indoor mask mandate

From October 15, 2020 through March 25, 2022, Hawaii’s Safe Travels program required travelers to either provide proof of vaccination or proof of a negative test in order to bypass a long quarantine period. As the clock struck midnight in Hawaii last night, that requirement changed.

The Safe Travel’s Hawaii website has been updated with an eye-catching notice, which says:

NOTICE: At the end of the day, March 25, 2022, the Safe Travels Hawai‘i program will conclude. Beginning March 26, 2022, there will be no COVID-related requirements for arriving domestic passengers. Travelers arriving in Hawai‘i directly from international airports must still comply with U.S. federal requirements; consult with your airline.”

For the U.S. federal requirements for travelers arriving directly form an international airport, see this link to the CDC.

Additionally, Hawaii’s indoor mask mandate has been lifted effective today. Per this KHON2 segment, there may be a few situations where a mask may still be required.

Governor Ige issued a statement about reaching this point. In it he shared the following,

“This has been a long journey for all of us. Hawaiʻi has had the fewest cases per capita in the country and the second lowest death rate in the country thanks to all of us pulling together as a community. Each one of you has contributed to protecting public health, re-vitalizing our economy, and strengthening our communities.
“Once again, I thank you for all you’ve done, and continue to do, to keep our communities healthy, safe, and strong.”
Yes, it has been a long journey, indeed.

  1. Even if the CDC says the Hawaii County “community covid level” is low, keep in mind we only have 24 total ICU beds on the island and our hospital capacity is currently over 90%. Wear a mask in the airports and on the plane because medical transport off island is expensive. Protect yourself, and protect us – get vaccinated, boosted and wear a mask when traveling. Not because you have to, but because you care. Mahalo🙏
