.* I was disappointed to hear that the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources have fallen on such hard times that they have begun charging nonresidents a $3 fee to park at the Nu’uanu Pali Lookout. In my opinion, that’s a bit of a high fee considering that most folks only spend about 10 – 30 minutes here, there are no restroom facilities and the parking lot is notorious for car break ins. If you are a Hawaii resident, you are exempt from the fee. The Honolulu Advertiser

I was furious when I heard about it but one thought did cross my mind. If they are going to do this, they are going to have a monitor. That means, no more automobile theft!
They also said the funds are for the restoration and upkeep of the parks and trails etc. Hmmm... I can't argue with that. I haven't read the article yet but I will to see what others are saying but, if the outcry is loud enough, it may not last long.
If you and Andy come, you'll just have to have to pick me up on the way up the hill! ;)
Evelyn - I hope you are right that the parking attendant will monitor for car thefts. I hate to admit it, but I'm not as optimistic about it as you are. I hope I'm very wrong though.

I'm inclined to go with $1 if they must do anything. This keeps the vehicles safe. I'm still pissed at the idea but I honestly don't think it will last. I'll keep you posted on what horror they put up there.
I think they should charge the tour bus companies $20 a bus for road maintenance and leave the individuals alone. Let the local corporations making money pay that extra "tax" on their visitor income. While sitting there one quiet morning, it was fun watching the visitors finding their way there with their rental cars but the big, fat, noisy tour buses in that quiet, beautiful area were very annoying. The limos were okay but the buses were a serious eye sore in a small scenic place like that.
I guess Roberts won't be talking to me about advertising for them anytime soon. :)
