Take me there Tuesday: Liliha Bakery for Coco Puffs

For this “Take Me There Tuesday” posts, we’re highlighting a specific bakery item. It’s the Liliha Bakery Coco Puff on Oahu. If your dietary restrictions allow you to sample a Coco Puff, your mouth will thank you.

What is a coco puff?

A Coco Puff is a puffed pastry filled with a creamy chocolate pudding and topped with a thick, chantilly “frosting.” They’re similar to an eclair, but smaller, and, dare I say, more delicious, too.

Where to find Coco Puffs in Hawaii?

Liliha Bakeries on Oahu are THE place to get coco puffs. When we first started Go Visit Hawaii,  there was only one Liliha location and it wasn’t really on the tourist path. Since then, they’ve added other locations, including a convenient one in Waikiki at the International Marketplace.

Are Coco Puffs popular in Hawaii?

Yes, they’re absolutely popular. We were once on an evening flight from Oahu to Maui and we saw several passengers carrying Liliha Bakery boxes.

When I originally wrote about Coco Puffs back in 2009, a local resident commented, “Those things are awesome. Folks who show up at work with a box of Coco Puffs get a lot of extra bonus points.”

Coco Puffs are so loved and iconic in Hawaii that they even had a role in an episode of the television show Hawaii 5-0.

What do others say about Liliha Coco Puffs?

As I previously mentioned, from our original article about Coco Puffs, we had this interesting comment from Aja, “All I can say is WOW – stumbled across this post before going to spend a week in Oahu and it was more than worth the $50 round trip cab ride from Waikiki just to taste one of those amazing coco puffs!! Of course, I couldn’t just stop at one and after buying a box to go I was left licking the wrappers after the last one was eaten. Thank you so much for this recommendation!!”

Aja shared that comment in 2010, which was when Liliha Bakery only had one location on Kaukini Street. Thankfully, the new Waikiki location at International Marketplace is much more convenient now.
