More Oahu Big Wave News & Views

Eddie Aikau (via Wikipedia)

Has your local news been reporting about the massive waves in Hawaii like mine has? You know my ears always perk up whenever I hear Hawaii mentioned. My local news station, WRAL, has been sharing the news of these extra large waves pounding the north shores of the islands.

Today, WRAL shared footage of the big waves from Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu.  The video footage panned from the view of the waves out to the crowds of onlookers lined all along Kamehameha Highway. I’ve never seen it that crowded.

Thanks to the power of technology, you don’t have to fly to Oahu today and fight the crowds to see these monster waves. You can watch the Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave surfing event today. This is a special event that only occurs when the waves reach minimum height of 20 feet, which translates to a wave face height of over 30 feet. So, how special is this event? Since its inception in 1985, it’s only been held seven other times.  Use this link to access the live feed

If you don’t know who Eddie Aikau, the namesake of this competition, take a few minutes to read about this Hawaiian surfing hero. If I may, I’d like to borrow a famous phrase from Hawaii and say, “Eddie Would Go.”
