Hawaii Vacation Deals and News Roundup 2/26/09

Here’s what’s cooking in the Hawaii vacation news kitchen today:

* Since Mokulele Airlines began inter-island service a few months ago, fare wars surfaced. Just this week, a new twist to the fare war began. Mokulele is offering travel coupons — five one-way flight vouchers for the total cost of $267. That works out to $53.40 per one-way flight, which is not a bad price. In comparison, we paid $70 per ticket for an inter-island flight just four months ago. The coupons are fully transferable. See this link

for more details.

* In response to Mokulele’s coupon books, Hawaiian Airlines is offering a $43 inter-island flight guarantee for HawaiianMiles Members. If you’re not a member, you can sign-up for a free account on their Web site. This price guarantee is only good for travel between March 2 and May 15, 2009.  Meanwhile, go! is still advertising flights starting at $27 one-way.

* United Vacations has a sale on travel packages to Oahu. The sale saves you up to $200 plus free nights. The promotion code to use is OAHUSALE. You can read more about it here. (Hat tip to Go Visit Hawaii reader, Brian.)

* The Pacific Whale Foundation is looking for volunteers to count Humpback whales from Maui’s shoreline this Saturday, February 28th. Doesn’t that sound like fun? To sign up, call Pacific Whale Foundation at 1-808-249-8811 or email programs@pacificwhale.org.

* If you’re not going to be on Maui this Saturday, but have a hankering to volunteer, the Pacific Whale Foundation has other volunteer opportunities

that sound like very worthy and rewarding efforts.

* Many readers have written to express an interest and concern over the declining visitor numbers. KGMB had this video summarizing the current visitor numbers.

  • There must be some very good buys out there. One of my more frugal friends in visiting soon and he is a key indicator that there really low prices available.

  • Keahi - Ha! I like your method of judging deals - a frugal friend.

Yes, there are fantastic deals. In fact, they're the best I've seen since I've been following Hawaii travel starting in 2003. About a year ago, you'd see deals that might include a free night say after 5 or 6 nights and that was it. Now, I'm finding most deals with every 3rd or 4th night free, plus free breakfast for two, plus resort credit, etc. A Hawaii vacation in 2009 will certainly provide more value than it has in years past.
