Expect to pay more to fill your tank in Hawaii.

Oh my, gas prices have hit an all time high in Hawaii. According to the Pacific Business News, the statewide average price for regular unleaded gas is $3.58 per gallon. The highest Hawaii price reported was $3.93 on Maui in Wailuku. I bet the prices in Lana’i are even higher. Eek!

I hate to the the bearer of bad news, but I thought it might be helpful for you to know about gas prices before you go to Hawaii. It’s better to get sticker shock while you’re sitting down reading your computer than when you drive by the first gas station after picking up your rental car. You could go into sticker shock at that point and that could be a dangerous situation when you’re behind the wheel.

  • I had to laugh about the shock factor! Yeah, I guess it is better to be sitting down and not driving when you see it. I just get mad. It just gives more strength to certain arguments about oil products, etc. We also know that our various companies didn't pay the prices to support what they're charging us for them. No shock, just anger and irritation.

I think the warning for visitors is a good idea. I still had to giggle about it though -- being on this side of things I guess we need to find some humor in it if we can. At least I need to find humor in it... if at all possible. Sigh.

You know... you just talked about renting a car or relying on public transportation... based on the price of gas it may be worth another look at that option! Unfortunately, this will probably only be effective on Oahu.

  • Hi Evelyn, I'm glad you got a laugh about the shock factor. I guess with prices like these, you can choose to laugh or cry or laugh and cry at the same time. :-)

I'm literally just shaking my head as I think about the price of gas. It's just terrible!

You make a good point about reconsidering whether to rent a car or use public transportation in Hawaii. I agree with you about Oahu being the most effective island for public trans. Maui and Kaua'i have little known bus systems as well, but they don't have as good of coverage as Oahu does. Lana'i is another island that you can get around without a car as there is an excellent shuttle system. If I remember correctly we paid $35 per person to have unlimited shuttles during our entire stay on Lana'i. We did rent a jeep for one day there for that dusty 4-wheel drive adventure.

  • Sheila, I got a real kick out of the gas price post. Here on the Big Island, I paid $3.729 a gallon yesterday.....Premium is now over $4.00.... The cheapest gas for sale is at Costco. It is about $.27 per gallon cheaper than the normal market rate...I tell all my visitors to plan their excursions to include a fill up at Costco in Kona....jerry

  • Hi Jerry - I'm glad you got a chuckle out of this post.
Thanks for the tip on finding the cheapest gas around Kona. We're not currently Costco members, but it sounds like it might be a good idea to join just for this upcoming trip to the Big Island. We'll be there on Wednesday. We're still hoping that we'll be able to meet up with both of you while we're there. I'll be in touch soon.
Mahalo for your stopping in with your first time comment!
