Free Kona Coffee Tasting & Farm Tour at Greenwell Farms

Kona coffee beans growing on the tree at Greenwell Farms

A great little tour to plan into your Hawaii (Big) Island vacation is a stop at Greenwell Farms in the heart of the world-famous, Kona coffee country.

Free farm tours and coffee tastings are offered every day starting from daily. The friendly guides take you to see coffee growing on the trees and to some of the processes that result in the finished product.

These Kona coffee beans dry in the sun for a week. They are raked every thirty minutes to insure even drying.

The tour lasts roughly 30 minutes. It is a walking tour, but there’s not a great deal of walking required — perhaps just a quarter of a mile in total. Umbrellas are provided for shade and/or a passing sprinkle of rain.

A Kona coffee tasting station is set up beside of a Greenwell Farms shop. Tasting is free, though you’re likely going to want to purchase a bag of beans to take home like we did. We splurged on a bag of the very smooth-tasting Onouli beans which are grown on trees that are over 100 years old.

Greenwell Farms is located just south of Kailua-Kona town at 81-6581 Mamalahoa Highway in Kealakekua.
