Oahu’s Makapu’u Point

Oahu’s easternmost point — Makapu’u Point — also happens to be a very beautiful place and a must-see on your Oahu vacation.

Makapu’u Point is very easy to access off of Kalanianaole Highway (Highway 72). It is also convenient to other scenic stops, such as the nearby Halona Blowhole. See this Google Map of Makapu’u Point. (From that map you can create your own directions to Makapu’u.)

When you are in the area, we recommend you at least stop at the Makapu’u Lookout. You’ll find the turnout with ample parking just off the main highway. Makapu’u Lookout offers a amazing scenery with views to the ocean, Makapu’u Beach and the islets Manana (Rabbit) Island, which is the taller of the two islets and Kaohikaipu Island, which is the flatter of the two. In the distance you can also see the Mokulua Islands and Kaneohe.

The water and coral below is so beautiful to see from the Makapu’u Lookout. While we were there recently, we saw a manta ray swimming. If you are visiting between January and March, you might see a humpback whale off in the deeper water.

The red-roofed Makapu’u Lighthouse is definitely worth seeing while you are here. For an excellent lighthouse view, hike/walk the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail
