A drive (or tour) along Highway 72 on the east side of Oahu is not to be missed on your Oahu vacation. The dramatic coastline and crater views are impressive sights.
One stop to include on your scenic, east Oahu drive is at the Halona Blowhole Lookout. From here, you can observe the waves crashing to shore and as pressure builds, a spout of water that blasts up from a crevice in the lava rock.
There’s a pull out with several parking spaces at the Halona Blowhole Lookout. It’s located very near to mile marker 15 on Highway 72, which is named Kalaniana’ole Highway. The following screenshot from Google Maps Streetview shows the approach to the parking lot as you are driving northeast and away from Waikiki and Hanauma Bay.
Once you’ve parked up, you might need to be patient as you watch for the blast of water. If you can plan your visit around high tide, you’ll see better activity. See this link for tide predictions from nearby Hanauma Bay.
The following 20-second video of Halona Blowhole by YouTube user Tim McMahon gives you the idea of what blowhole activity looks like.
The following Google Map identifies the Halona Blowhole Lookout. From the map, you can generate directions.
In addition to the blowhole, there’s another interesting view to see here — Halona Beach Cove. After you view the blowhole, check out the beach cove view from the right (southern) side of the overlook area.
