River of Lava Video That’ll Make You Say Wow

You’ve got to check out this recent video from the USGS showing a river of lava flowing from a new breakout. I gawked! Go ahead and watch it and I bet you will, too.

Last week, I wrote a brief Big Island lava update to share some of the new activity. Here’s a photo produced by the USGS that provides a great pictorial summary of the lava action near Kalapana. This composite photo overlays a thermal image with a conventional photo.

Some of the large areas shown in red, pink and purple indicate lava that was flowing in July and August of this year. Those lava flow areas are now inactive but still warm

. Can you imagine that? Three to four months later and the lava is still cooling! Amazing, isn’t it?
