Last week, I wrote a brief Big Island lava update to share some of the new activity. Here’s a photo produced by the USGS that provides a great pictorial summary of the lava action near Kalapana. This composite photo overlays a thermal image with a conventional photo.
Some of the large areas shown in red, pink and purple indicate lava that was flowing in July and August of this year. Those lava flow areas are now inactive but still warm
