As far as we know, the thousands of humpback whales who visit Hawaii each winter are not subject to the 14-day quarantine. 😉 So, we expect humpback whale season to proceed as normal.
Though the beginning of Hawaii’s humpback whale season doesn’t generally start until December/January, some whales still don’t have calendars 😉 and so they arrive earlier. In fact, it’s possible that some whales are on their way to Hawaii right now. Therefore, it’s time to kick off our 11th annual contest to predict the first humpback whale sighting of the 2020/2021 season!
Here’s how this fun and easy little contest works:
For your reference, here’s a list of the first-recorded sightings in recent years.

First sighting will be Sat, October 10, 2020.
First Humpback to be sighted I think will be Sept 27th.
Husband says that, based on his algorithm, it will be October 17th
They will be late because need a quarantine :)
I think I saw one yesterday, Sept 10, in Kohala waters! Definitely we saw blowing, but I was driving so couldn't watch to see the animal. Seemed too big a blow for dolphins. Wound up on this site while searching to see if anyone else saw it.
If that wasn't a whale, I'm predicting early appearance on September 20.
All entries are locked! Now, we wait and see when the first whale arrives. :-)
The first whale of the new season has been spotted off Maui on October 8th per Maui News: https://www.mauinews.com/news/local-news/2020/10/first-humpback-of-season-spotted/
