Aloha Friday Photo: Halona Blowhole, Oahu

Mahalo to John Irwin of Dunedin, Florida for sharing this excellent photo of Halona Blowhole on Oahu with us for Aloha Friday Photos

. Here’s what John had to say about this experience:

I stumbled upon this menacing blowhole by accident as I was jumping around on the rocks near an amazing little beach I had been snorkeling off. It’s right off the winding highway on Oahu’s east coast. The height of the spray depends on the tide, and I found out later that a few poor folks have fallen into it and not survived. Maybe I shouldn’t have gotten so close but the haunting sound of the waves whooshing underneath the lave rocks and exploding out a few seconds later was mesmerizing. I spent at least 30 minutes standing there, just fascinated. No one else around, one of those unforgettable moments.

As John mentioned, blowholes are amazing to watch and hear. It’s best to keep a safe distance, though. Halona Blowhole

is safe and easy to view from the lookout off of Oahu’s Highway 72.

Happy Aloha Friday!

  • My Dad found out I was born when he was on leave (Navy) and sitting here mesmerized at the blowhole. Someone ran the telegram out to him. I have had the honor of taking him back from the Mainland to visit "the" blowhole. It has a special meaning for both of us.

    • Oh, that's so neat, Joy! Thanks for sharing your connection to this place.

  • My husband and I spend 8 weeks in the most beautiful islands ever over the winter, we are from Nova Scotia Canada 🇨🇦. We were told a must see was the blow hole. We went and was totally amazed....took too many pictures but hey, why not...lol
We ❤️ the islands and its people!
    Thanks for the memories.

    • Eight weeks in Hawaii in the winter sound divine!

It's really hard to visit Halona Blowhole and not take too many photos. I'm also a member of that club. :-)
