We normally share readers photos on Fridays, but today we’re sharing a special photo for this day of Pearl Harbor Remembrance.
Mahalo to Matt McGee
for sharing this photo of an original copy of the front page of a special edition of Honolulu Star-Bulletin that published shortly after the devastating Pearl Harbor bombing on December 7, 1941. He took this photo from the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Here’s what Matt shared,Down at the bottom, you can kinda see the text that explains how the Star-Bulletin published this “1st Extra” edition of the paper within 90 minutes of the bombing, and it included a preliminary list of the dead and injured, etc. It’s hard to see, but in the upper right it says “Price: Five Cents” under the word “extra.”
We can’t fault the early reports for inaccuracies. Sadly, the numbers of casualties and injuries were woeful under reported at that point in time. Nevertheless, this news must have been shocking.
We hope you’ll join us in taking a moment to remember the sacrifices on this date that will live in infamy.
