Video Sights & Sounds of the Lava Lake in Halemaumau

The USGS has posted some incredible footage of the the movement, spattering and sounds of the lava lake inside Halemaumau crater at Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. (Hattip to Big Island Video News.)

Click on the following image to access the video footage.

And, here’s another short video. (Again, click on the image to access the video.)

I’m just amazed at these images and sounds. It’s mindboggling!

When you visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, it’s easy to see Halemaumau Crater and observe the smoke and evening glow of the subterranean lave lake emanating from the vent. You can’t get as close as the camera that shot the above video, but you can get a great view from a safer distance at the Jaggar Museum.

When you view Halemaumau at dusk, you begin to see the glow from the lava lake.

For more details on seeing Halemaumau, see my post: Halemaumau: Where the Earth Smokes & Glows

.
The plume of smoke and gasses coming from the vent in Halemaumau is clearly visible during daylight.

If you can’t get to the Big Island anytime, soon, you can still see this crater in action on your computer via  the webcam at the Jaggar Museum.
