Hawaii Vacation Deals and News Roundup for January 27

  • After an 18 month absence of lava flowing to the ocean inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s boundaries, there’s a new lava ocean entry point inside the park. This new point is at Wahaula which is between the end of the Chain of Craters Road and the other lava flow point at Waikupanaha which is at the end of Highway 130 near Kalapana. Based on the photos from KGMB
, it appears that the new flow is not nearly as dramatic as the more established ocean entry point at Waikupanaha. Per KGMB, rangers at the national park are urging people to go to the Waikupanaha viewing station instead of Wahaula, because it is safer. See my tips for lava viewing. • In commemoration of Hawaii’s 50th year of statehood, Hilton Hawaii is offering a “50 Years of Aloha”
package at four of its hotels: Hilton Waikoloa Village (Big Island), Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa (Oahu), Doubletree Alana Hotel (Oahu) and Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa (Maui). The package includes fifth night for $50 and a $50 resort credit.
  • The Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa,a Waldorf Astoria property, just announced the completion of their $50 million renovation. (Note this resort is included in the above mentioned “50 Years of Aloha” package.)
  • Hawaiian Airlines has a new sale with fares starting at $279 round-trip. The sale is valid for travel  between now and June 4, 2009 and varies based on when you travel. The most expensive fare is $438 round-trip, which is pretty darn good, actually. You must book by January 30, 2009.
  • Interested in seeing how Oahu shaped President Obama? I think Wendy Perrin has a great post after my own frugal heart: Experience Obama’s Oahu on the Cheap.
  • Jimmy Buffett plans a couple of concerts at the end of February on Oahu and Maui.
