Per the Honolulu Advertiser, the National Park Service has halted the guided downhill bicycle tours. Effective October 10th, the downhill bike tours will be suspended.
“With three fatalities and several serious accidents within a year, it is important to stop and critically analyze this commercial activity in the park,” said Parris.
The safety stand-down is scheduled for a minimum of 60 days or until such time as the park can analyze available information and determine whether downhill bicycle tours can safely operate in the future.
I’m glad to see the serious stance on safety for a change. Three deaths and numerous injuries are unacceptable. I just hope for everyone involved that a feasible and safe solution can be found going forward.
