Fact 2 of 50 About Hawaii – When the flag with the 50th Star First Flew
Posted on Sat, Jul 4, 2009 by Sheila
Though Hawaii became a state in 1959, it wasn’t until July 4, 1960 that the new flag with all 50 stars flew for the first time throughout the country.
Speaking of July 4th, I’d like to wish you a happy Independence Day. If you’re lucky enough to be in Hawaii today, you’ll find many opportunities to celebrate the day in these listings:
- July 4th Fireworks and Events on Oahu
- July 4th Fireworks and Events on Maui, Kauai, & the Big Island

Sheila I thought since you posted the subject of the flag you might like to read the story behind it from the Hawaiians perspective and what we tell the visitors at the museum when they look at this quilt.
