The 2009 events are listed below for reference purposes only. For 2011 events, follow the links above. ^

MAUI

July 4th Fireworks in Lahaina – Starting at 5pm, Lahaina town will begin celebrating with a free concert followed by a waterfront fireworks display at 8pm. You’ll be able to see the fireworks free of charge from the oceanfront, but for something unique, consider taking a tour boat out for the fireworks. Trilogy is one of my favorite boat tour companies in Maui and they have a special July 4th dinner and fireworks excursion. The Pacific Whale Foundation has some special boat tours, too.

44th Annual Makawao Paniolo Parade – Well this Upcountry event isn’t necessarily Independence Day focused, but it’s a great cultural event celebrating the paniolo, Hawaii’s cowboy. The parade starts at 9:00am in Makawao Town. See this link for more information. It’s also noteworthy to mention that the 54th Annual Makawao Rodeo is on from July 2 – 5.

KAUAI

20th Annual Concert in the Sky – At the Vidinha Soccer Field in Lihue, you’ll find games, food, live entertainment and fireworks. (Note that HAPA will be performing.) The celebration begins at 4pm. This event is a fundraiser for Kauai Hospice, so an entrance fee is required. See more information about this event and how to purchase tickets here.

July 4th Fireworks and Celebration in Kekaha – The small town of Kekhka on Kauai’s southwest shore will host a free Independence Day celebration including games, crafts, cultural displays, and live music followed by fireworks. The festivities begin at 5pm at Faye Ballpark. See this link for more information.

BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII

Great Waikoloa Rubber Duckie Race & 4th of July Extravaganza – Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Kohala Coast is hosting a great line up of events all day on July 4th. They’ll have games, bands, a rubber duckie race, and fireworks set to live music. (Note that the U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific will be performing.) See more about these fun festivities here.

Kailua-Kona Community 4th of July Parade & Celebration – A fun parade through Kailua-Kona starts at 5:30 followed by fireworks display over Kailua Bay at 8:30pm. For more information with a parade route map, see this link.

Turtle Independence Day – This annual event at the Mauna Lani Resort educates visitors about the endangered Hawaiian green turtle, the honu. Young honu are raised in the ponds at the Mauna Lani Resort before their July 4th independence day when they are released back in to the ocean. This event goes from 10:30am until noon. See this link for more information.

Volcano Village July 4th Parade & Celebration –  This Independence Day parade will begin at 9 a.m. at the Volcano Post Office and proceed for one half mile along Old Volcano Road to Cooper Community Center. The parade will feature the Hawaii County Band, floats, antique cars, fire engines, bicycles, horses, and animals in costumes! Music, games, food booths, dunking pond, craft fair and prizes to follow. Call Betsy Mitchell for more infomation at (808) 967-7209. (Per KonaWeb)

Hilo 4th of July Fireworks – A fireworks show sponsored by the Hilo Jaycee’s is set to start at 8:00pm from Coconut Island. You can view the fireworks from the waterfront in Hilo town.

Don’t forget that you can watch nature’s fireworks e.g., the active volcano. You can watch lava flowing from the Kalapana area.  From within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you can watch the red lava glow from Halemaumau crater at night. Use these links for more helpful information:

  1. Your honorable sensei; your’e absolutely correct: Twice a year. Let’s deprive our kid’s of generations of tradition and fun because of a few idiots who don’t have a handle on it. Do you know how may cars are on the road out here on these little dots? And do you know how many accidents, fatalaties etc as a result? So, lets just ban driving? Does that make sense? If guys like you had their way none of us would have any fun. people get hurt at rodeos all the time. So, lets ban rodeos.

  2. Wow, what a switch,,, from fireworks to cigarettes in restaurants. Whatever happened to “if you don’t like it, don’t do it”?. You don’t like smoke in restaurants, don’t go to that restaurant. You don’t like what’s on that station, don’t listen to it or watch it. You don’t like what some business makes or does, don’t buy their product. What makes you think we can’t decide for ourselves and that someone else needs to tell us all where to go, what to do, think & say? If you don’t like the smokey little dots in the pacific, or a supposedly free country, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

  3. I noticed on the Sheraton Maui Resort’s page on Facebook that they’re having a rubber duckie race on the 4th, too. Is this the start of a new trend in Independence Day celebrations? 🙂

  4. The similarities between smoking in restaurants and fireworks are numerous.

You cannot get away from the smoke
    Asthma people are at risk
Increase chances of fires by stupid or careless people

If both of these activities were not an invasion of people’s rights not to be affected by these activities I’d support them both.

  5. @ Kris – ha! I wonder about that connection to July 4th, too.Maybe they’re freedom fighter ducks. 😉 The Sheraton Maui did that at Easter, too, but we missed it because we went to Liza’s church for Easter service.
